This rarely seen Saab was owned by Otto Krupicka of Omaha, Nebraska for almost four decades. He cherished this car and always kept it garaged. He included many extra spare parts that come with the car.
‘Born from Jets’ is Saab’s advertising tagline and this car lives up to that motto, especially on the inside. MotoeXotica Classic Cars presents this 1967 Longnose Saab 96 Sedan. Front-wheel drive, a three-cylinder, two-stroke engine and a body designed in a wind tunnel are all elements that set Saab 96s apart from their competitors.
Assembled in Trollhattan, Sweden, this example is one of 10,529 Saabs imported into the United States in 1967.
Dressed in new-for-1967 Light Beige (code Y-5L), this car’s paint and trim are in very good, order and was correctly repainted sometime during the previous ownership. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy, the car’s battery appears new and the chrome bumpers are in very good order.
This Saab is shod in Michelin 135-380 13.5/15 tires. Each tire is mounted on factory, vented alloy wheels. The wheels are in good, original shape while the tires are in similar order. The car has rear mudflaps and this example comes with a full set of extra disc wheel covers that are in excellent condition.
Under the forward-hinged hood is a .8L, two-stroke, three-cylinder engine with triple Solex carburetors. In the US, the two-stroke engine was called the ‘Shrike’ in 1967 and 1968. It used pre-mix oil and appeared with a three throat Solex carburetor in which the center carburetor handled start, idle, and low speed functions while the other two helped out with engine revolutions. Connected to the engine is a four-speed manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter. Being a 2-stroke engine, the car does smoke on start up.
Inside, the gray and brown front buckets and rear seat are in overall great shape while the floormats are in good, overall shape, as is the neutral-colored headliner. The two-spoke steering wheel is in very good order. When you sit down in the driver’s seat and look at the dashboard, with its levers and dials, the Born from Jets part really hits home as it looks like one is sitting in the pilot’s seat in an aircraft. The gauges are made by VDO. The column-mounted gear shift and a pair of AM/FM stereos complete the interior, one with a cassette deck and one without but the horn is inoperable.
The front suspension used double wishbones and coil springs while the rear suspension was a trailing U-beam axle with coil springs. Telescopic dampers were used for all four wheels. Up to model year 1967 models had drum brakes all around.
An unusual feature of the Saab drivetrain was a ‘freewheel’ (overrunning clutch). This allowed the transmission to run faster than the engine, such as when decelerating, or descending a long hill. Although such freewheels had been provided in other cars before as an economy measure, they were required in the Saab because of the limited lubrication in the two-stroke engine. A petroil-lubricated two-stroke requires lubrication according to its speed but provides this lubrication according to the amount of its throttle opening. Where the engine operates at high RPM and low throttle (such as when coasting down a long hill), the lubrication provided may be inadequate. With the freewheel, a coasting engine could reduce its speed to idling, thus requiring only the small lubrication available from the closed, coasting, throttle. In certain higher-performance models and in later two-stroke models, direct injection of oil into the engine from a separate reservoir allowed lubrication to be a function of engine RPM and rendered mixing of oil with gasoline unnecessary.

Competition to this Saab in 1967 included Chevrolet’s Corvair and Chevy II, Ford’s Falcon, Plymouth’s Valiant, Toyota’s Corolla and Volkswagen’s Beetle.
