Production Notes and Overview:
At a unprecedented $29,900,00 MSRP, with most selling at 2x list or for $60k or more, the GNX is legendary for its staggering performance; powered by an McLaren modified efficient, turbocharged 3.8 liter (231 cubic inch) V6 engine originally underrated at 276 bhp although actual output is 300 bhp (304 PS; 224 kW) and 420 lb⋅ft (569 N⋅m). McLaren specific modifications included replacement of the stock turbocharger with a special Garrett hybrid unit featuring a super-lightweight ceramic impeller, the first of its kind. The decreased impeller weight allows the turbocharger to spin up much faster, dramatically increasing performance while decreasing the turbo lag or spool time inherent in most other turbocharged engines. Maximum boost was set at 15 psi and the turbo also incorporated special dynamic turbine shaft seals in the center housing rotating assembly to reduce drag on the shaft. The turbine housing was redesigned to include a contamination trap to keep solid particles away from the turbine wheel and help prevent excessive turbocharger wear. Also installed was a more efficient Garrett air-to-air intercooler with a higher fin count for additional cooling capacity and better vehicle performance. The intercooler to engine pipe was coated with a special ceramic/aluminum compound with a Cermatel (ceramic-aluminum) for increased heat rejection and dissipation, helping ensure a cooler and denser charged air feed for the engine. Functional vents were installed on the front fenders to pull heat away from the engine while driving to further cool underhood temperatures and enhance performance. A Turbo Hydra-Matic 200-4R transmission was beefed up for increased hydraulic pressure and modified for firmer shifts. Also added was a special front-mounted auxiliary oil cooler to lower fluid temperatures, thus enhancing the efficiency and extending the life of the transmission. The Engine Control Module (ECM) was recalibrated and reprogrammed with an exclusive GNX-only management chip. The factory single-muffler exhaust system was replaced with a completely redesigned freer-flow dual-exhaust system with two low-restriction mufflers that were modified to clear the special suspension.
The GNX’s performance was measured faster than the Ferrari F40 and the Porsche 930 with a 1⁄4 mile (402 m) time of 12.7 seconds at 113.1 mph (182 km/h) (0.3 and 0.8 seconds quicker, 2.9 and 13.3 mph (21 km/h) faster) and a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time of 4.6 seconds (0.4 and 0.3 seconds quicker, respectively).
GNX's rear axle received a longitudinal torque ladder bar with a panhard rod to help prevent wheel hop and torque twist. This special assembly also absorbs rear axle side loads and keeps the rear axle properly located during hard cornering. In addition to assuring excellent handling characteristics, this suspension configuration actually causes the GNX to rise in the rear at pre-load and drop to a level stance – with the transmission and axle properly aligned – to deliver full power during high-energy launches. This five-link rear suspension is quite effective in diminishing undesirable axle/wheel vehicle motions and maintaining appropriate vehicle handling attitude under a range of driving conditions. The GNX also received a special rear axle housing cover made of lightweight aluminum, appropriately embossed with “GNX” which serves as an additional strengthening element and mounting point for the torque bar. For even more body integrity and stability in handling its incredible drivetrain torque, the GNX body received special structural reinforcements, including bracing behind the rear seat as well as chassis bracing in the form of a steel cross member between the frame rails. Finally, to assure all this horsepower is properly planted to the pavement, the GNX came with among the biggest tires available at the time: performance P245/50VR16 Goodyear Eagle Razorbacks in front and P255/50VR16's in the rear.
Body and Interior Design Modifications:
McLaren also modified the exterior of the GNX for the very best of both form and function. The GNX received stylish and functional post-war Buick front fender vents just forward of the doors, Custom designed composite fender flares were fitted to the wheel wells to make room for the larger wheels and tires and provide distinctive styling. Goodyear Eagle VR performance Gatorback tires were mounted on custom-made 16-inch super lightweight alloy lace wheels with black centers and lug caps, each accentuated by a deep, finely-polished rim.
GNX Specific black color with blacked-out trim, and exterior identification is limited to small “GNX” badging placed on the front radiator grille, rear deck lid, and wheel centers. Under the hood, a special turbocharger heat shield features an exclusive “GNX” stamped design, while the custom aluminum rear differential cover is embossed with “GNX.” Decals and assembly information are found on the intercooler, cowl area, and inside driver's door to indicate each vehicle's special build status. The GNX was factory equipped as a Grand National, with the exception of T-tops or a sun/moonroof because these could compromise the structural rigidity necessary in a high-horsepower performance vehicle with such body-twisting torque. In the GNX cockpit, the stock dash cluster was completely replaced with full instrumentation featuring a custom Stewart Warner analog gauge package including an analog turbo boost gauge.. The instruments included a 160 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, turbo boost gauge, oil pressure gauge, fuel gauge, and water temperature gauge to properly monitor the car's vital signs. Each GNX received a special numbered plaque mounted on the passenger side dash which identified the build number of that particular vehicle - this Example being 392 of 547.
