Up for sale is my 2004 Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works. The car has been well cared for over the years and owned by enthusiasts only - THE CAR COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL WINDOW STICKER. Even when servicing recently at Mini of Mt. Laurel, the technician was shocked it was a 2004 by how clean it is. The car has 143,XXX miles; however, unlike Minis that have not had the 100k-150k service done, this is a fine example of an R53 Mini JCW.
The JCW is BRG Metallic with Black Leatherette Interior. The car came from the factory with the Cold Weather, Premium, and Sport packages. Cold Weather includes the heated washer jets and mirrors, Sport includes the 17 run flat wheel & tire package along with DSC, sport seats, fog lamps, and xenon headlights with washers, while the Premium package is a bit more standard detailing the multifunction steering wheel and other more standard items.
The car was originally imported into New Jersey, then found its new home at Motor City Mini of Detroit, Michigan. The owner kept it for the majority of its life, and then purchased a newer JCW Mini three/four years ago and gave the car to his daughter. Making its way to Connecticut, I purchased the car myself where it has been in New Jersey ever since, making its way back to its roots.
The first owner maintained the car quite well, it has a full length of service records that will come with the car outlining anything from wipers failing once to a new JCW head and head gasket job. The second owner past these service records on to me, and had simply maintained the car since receiving it from her father with the only major service being completed including a supercharger rebuild. When I got the car, I went through basic service items. The car recently has had an oil change, new air filter, new plugs, new wires, new o2 sensors, and new drive belt. The car has also been serviced for the Power Steering recall and o2/ECU Service Bulletin by Mini of Mt Laurel.
Engine & Drivetrain
Not only is the car equipped well from the factory, but it is a JCW with the accompanying JCW tuning kit which includes ECU tune, upgraded injectors, and the cold air system that replaces the airbox with a custom ram air, conical air filtered unit - extremely well designed. As mentioned above, the car has had its 100k/150k service marks hit with the supercharger rebuilt, head gasket and newly machined JCW head installed, service recalls and bulletins addressed, and finally, the minor maintenance items.
The engine and transmission are rock solid. They make the car such a joy to drive with a bump from 163hp to 210hp making all the difference when you hear the roots blower whine. The car has never overheated, and not gone without its routine oil change. I would not hesitate to drive this car long distances as I have done so myself.
The car always starts just as it should, the transmission does not have any grinds, and has a very crisp shift. Since the power steering has been serviced under the recall by Mini of Mt Laurel, the steering is nice and firm - little too firm at start up if you ask me. However, after a achieving optimal operating temperature it does tend to have more fluid steering.
I did change the supercharger cover decal as the old one was faded; however, I will include this with the sale along with the window sticker, service records, second key, and blank key, as well as the original owner's manual.
Suspension & Body
Suspension is all JCW components which would have been installed as part of the package. Suspension is tight and not lacking at all. By looking through the service records, you'll see that has been taken care of as well. The notorious BMW control arm bushings have been taken care of with PowerFlex polyurethane units which from experience are quality pieces. Other components have been maintained and replaced as well. The front strut towers are not cracked like that of other R53 Minis or 3 Series BMWs, no rust or stress cracks around the base or top of the towers.
The body is the one area of this car that I cannot speak as highly of as the rest. The car is mechanically sound; however, had I intended to keep this car longer, I would have the stone chips in the hood and front bumper filled and painted as well as the rear bumper painted. The car has two minor flaws being a rear bumper scuffed from city parking and a front bumper/hood scuffed from rock and stone chips. Aside from this, the paint really shines and you can see the metallic in the finish.
I have done my best to post everything as complete as possible, and of course, I am sure there is still some detail missing so please reach out to me so that I can answer any questions you might have. With that, I am not in a rush to sell and would like to see this car go to a good home rather than have a quick sale. Please reach out to me if you have low feedback and a low rating. Otherwise, thank you for looking and good luck on the hunt for Mini JCW.
