Designed by a young Harley Earl who would go on to become a legend as the head of the whole design and styling department at General Motors, the cars were a stunning success. But the market crash of '29 and ensuing depression caused a precipitous drop in sales. By 1932, only 3,290 examples were produced and sold. Here is your chance to own one of the rarest of these fine cars.
This car is presented in a two-tone paint scheme of Maroon and Black. A respray it received 50 years ago can be considered a mid-life refresh, because that's really what it was. Of-course the front of the car has all the styling cues of the time for luxury cars. A long, thin, piano hinged hood leading to a tall chrome grill, topped by a dramatic hood ornament that is a woman with her hair blowing in the wind. Separate fenders flair out from the grill and large chrome headlights with air horns just below them are braced across the center by a thin chrome rod with a LeSalle emblem in the center. There is a spare tire mounted on both sides set into the running boards and the large doors open toward each other making it quite easy to get in for a night on the town. At the back of the car it becomes obvious where the term the trunk of a car comes from.
Open those doors and you will find a beautiful Gray cloth interior. The door panel is a simple and tasteful repeating pattern of squares with wood trimming out the window. The split bench seat in front is button tufted and very comfortable. The large black steering wheel has controls for throttle (cruise control?) and lights in the center. Blinker controls are mounted on the column and a shifter for the 3-speed manual transmission extends from the floor. The dash board is topped by beautiful wood with a black panel below it that contains the speedometer on the right, a clock on the left, and gauges for fuel, water temperature, oil pressure, amperes, and ride regulation in between them. The glove box on the passenger side matches the gauge panel and a small decorative panel between them has the ignition key as well as several control knobs. The back seat is also super comfortable and has grab handles to assist in entry or exit and a footrest bar for your comfort on the trip.
Under that piano hinged hood, you will find a 353 cubic inch V8. It is the original engine for the car and has had regular service along with some repairs done during its lifetime. An interesting little feature under the hood is a holder and an oil can so you could lube things up on a much more regular basis than we need to these days. The power it makes is sent to the back wheels through a 3-speed manual transmission. The chassis and underside of this car are very solid and there are signs of regular maintenance like a newer exhaust system. The car sits on leaf springs both front and rear and there are drum brakes at all four corners. There are 6 Yellow wire wheels, one at each corner and two spares, with a center spin hub cap and wide white wall tires that are 7.50 X 17 inches.
A very rare example of a unique car. A wonderful part of Cadillac history designed by a young Harley Earl who would become a wonderful part of General Motors history. This car could be yours. Come on down and check it out.
